Wrong encryption key used?

When you added the SMTP AUTH username and password, it's recommended that you encrypt the server configuration document with the public keys of the administrator(s) and the server ID. If the server is unable to decrypt the configuration document, the username and password will appear to be blank.

Check the server log and ensure that the server configuration document is being decrypted by the server.

Also note, the server configuration document must be for a specific server. Using '*' will not work.
